Read Option out of Shotgun Split Twins Stack is a true zone read run play built around the QB reading the backside end or OLB off the edge. The QB and RB mesh in the backfield, with the RB path bending toward the playside B gap while the QB carries out the fake and reads the unblocked defender to decide whether to hand off or pull and attack the edge himself. Both stacked twins receivers on the left run vertical releases to hold the corners and safety deep, clearing the perimeter for a QB keep, making this a run-first play designed to punish aggressive edge defenders and light boxes.
Defensive Reads
Watch the backside defensive end or OLB pre-snap, his depth and hand placement tells you if he is crashing down on the mesh or staying home to contain the QB. If the defense shows a heavy box with a linebacker walked up over the stack, this run concept can get stuffed quickly, check to a pass instead. Post-snap, track whether the safety rotates down into the alley, a fast rotation to the run side signals a run blitz or contain scheme meant to erase the QB keep. Man coverage on the stacked twins with no safety help over the top means the corners are occupied on vertical routes and cannot help in run support, favoring the QB pull. If the user defender flashes down immediately off the snap to squat on the mesh, that is a strong indicator of a defensive line stunt or scrape exchange designed to take away both the give and the keep.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only trust the mesh read if the defense shows 6 or fewer in the box.
Use the stacked twins vertical releases to hold safeties deep, this opens up the QB keep lane if the corners bail into off coverage.
Manually crash the read defender with the RB fake if the CPU or user opponent squeezes hard, then pull and get the edge before the alley defenders can flow.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and medium) to keep defenses honest and set up play action shots later in the drive.
Pair this with PA Spot from the same set once you have hit Read Option a few times, since the run action sells the same mesh point and freezes linebackers for the deep dig and spot combo.
