Smash Y Dig is a Cover 2 beater out of Shotgun Split Twins Stack that stacks a corner route with an underneath flat/smash combo on one side while the Y runs a deep dig across the middle of the field. From the stack alignment, the outside receiver runs a corner route to the sideline while the inside stack receiver runs a quick out or flat route underneath to hold the corner and safety, creating a natural smash concept. The Y (tight end) works a crossing dig route from the opposite side, and the backfield receiver runs a flat route to the boundary as a checkdown/outlet against blitzes. This is a man and zone beater: the corner/flat smash combo attacks Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops, while the deep dig gives you a big-play option versus man coverage if the linebacker can't stay over top. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against Cover 2 (looking to throw over the flat defender before the safety rotates over), then works to the Y dig sitting down in the honey hole, with the flat route as the last-resort checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing; two safeties split deep at 10 to 12 yards signals Cover 2, which is exactly what this play is designed to punish with the corner and dig combo. Watch the flat/underneath defender at the snap; if he sinks to cover the flat route immediately, the corner route behind him should be wide open in the void. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender on the Y dig; if he opens his hips to run with the crosser or gets caught in traffic, the dig will sit down in soft coverage for a big gain. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shell with a hard-charging safety, since that can jump the corner route and take away the top read, forcing you to work the dig immediately. If the defense shows a disguised blitz with the safety crashing down pre-snap, get the ball out quickly to the flat route or dig before the pocket collapses, since the protection is not built to hold up long against extra rushers.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or single high before the snap; this play is built to attack Cover 2 specifically, so look for corners playing off with safeties split wide.
If you see Cover 2, throw the corner route on time before the safety can get over the top, since the flat defender is stressed by the underneath route holding him.
Against man coverage, hot route the flat route to a shallow drag or slant if you need a faster outlet against a blitz, and lean on the Y dig as your primary because it creates natural separation crossing the field.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain over the middle, since the dig route sits down around 12 to 15 yards.
Pair this play with PA Spot in your play-calling sequence; PA Spot looks similar out of run action but hits the flat and corner quickly, so alternating the two keeps linebackers honest and disguises whether you are running play action or a drop back dig concept.
