PA Spot from Shotgun Split Twins Stack uses play action to hold linebackers before running the classic Spot concept to the stacked side: a corner route clearing out deep, a quick out settling underneath, and a shallow drag crossing the field from the stack. On the backside, the single receiver takes the top off with a deep vertical to stretch the safety and hold the far corner. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat and hole defender with the out and drag while the corner route occupies the deep third, and the primary read progression starts with the flat/out route, works to the drag underneath, then checks the backside vertical if the safety bites on the play fake.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment, which signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the corner route has room to work behind the cornerback. Key the flat defender after the snap: if he sinks under the out route and ignores the drag, the shallow crosser is open immediately for a easy pickup. Watch for a user linebacker sitting in the shallow zone (lurk technique) since that defender can jump the drag route and bait a pick six if the quarterback stares it down too long. This play struggles against zone blitzes where the defense drops extra defenders into short zones after selling pressure, since it clogs both the out and drag windows. Cover 4 or quarters shells with two deep safeties can bracket the corner route and force the check down, so if you see two safeties deep pre-snap, plan on the drag or flat as your primary target instead of the vertical shot.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake by holding the play action button through the fake before releasing into your drop, since a lazy PA animation gets you sacked against fast defensive ends. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the defense is in a true Cover 3 shell or disguising into Cover 1, since the drag route becomes a big rip if a linebacker bails into deep coverage late. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the stack, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route or bench this play for Slot Cross instead. Attack this on early downs (1st and 2nd and medium) to keep defenses honest against your run game, then sequence it after Inside Zone or Power O so linebackers step up on run fits and open the throwing lanes underneath. Against teams that user the middle linebacker, target the out route to the flat first since that defender is often late reacting to the play fake.
