Breakdown

Power O out of Shotgun Split Twins Stack is a gap scheme run play built with a lead blocker and a pulling guard to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The line down blocks away from the play call while the backside guard pulls to lead through the hole, with the fullback or lead back kicking out or leading up on the first threat. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and overpursuing linebackers, and the primary read is the pulling guard's block, hitting downhill off his hip or bending it back if the frontside gets sealed.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap since stacked linebackers who creep to the line signal an aggressive downhill blitz that can blow up the pulling guard's path. Key the safety alignment, if both safeties are deep with no extra man in the box, Power O should hit clean off the pull. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill early since Power O counts on that overpursuit to cut it back for a big gain. Look for a lurking linebacker sitting in the B-gap or a defensive tackle stunting inside, both of which can beat the pulling guard's angle and blow up the play in the backfield. Against a stacked box with a safety cheating down pre-snap, avoid this call since the numbers favor the defense and the pull lane will be clogged.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run Power O into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage.

Use the stacked twins alignment to bait safeties into rotating late, since Power O hits fast enough to punish slow secondary rotation.

Hot route the stacked receivers into quick screens or bluff routes on early downs to keep the defense honest against your run tendencies.

Pair this play with Inside Zone in the same set so defenders cannot sit on one gap scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.

Best called on second and short or first down to stay ahead of the sticks, especially against defenses showing base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers at normal depth.
