Breakdown

Slot Cross features a deep crossing route from the stacked receiver side that works across the field to the opposite hash, converging with a vertical route from the outside receiver up top and an out breaking route from the other X to the flat. The two remaining backs stay in for protection while the deep cross serves as the primary read, working from the strong side across the field into open grass created by the vertical clear out. This is a man beater at its core, using the crosser's angle to lose man defenders in traffic while also stressing zone defenders who have to sink and wall off the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap since aggressive blitz packages will leave the crosser wide open in the vacated middle of the field. If the defense shows a two high safety shell pre-snap, expect the deep crosser to draw a linebacker or nickel defender who will struggle to stay with the route across the field. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest liability against this play, especially if the corner on the stack gets picked or rerouted early in the route. Zone coverages with disciplined linebacker drops and a rat defender spying the middle can take away the crosser, forcing a checkdown to the flat route underneath. Cover 3 with a hard sinking safety and Tampa 2 with a middle linebacker dropping deep are the best answers to shut this concept down.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the stacked receivers. If you see man coverage, trust the deep crosser to separate through traffic and target it as soon as it clears the opposite hash. Against zone, look to hit the crosser on the move before it runs into a linebacker's zone drop, or check down to the flat route if the underneath defenders sink too deep. This play pairs well with PA Spot in the same set since both use similar route stems that force linebackers to respect the pass first, opening up run lanes for Power O and Inside Zone later in a drive. Use Slot Cross on second and medium to long situations when you need a chunk gain, since the deep crosser takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket.
