Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight behind the defensive line they are cheating the run fit and will fill gaps fast. Identify whether the defense is in a one-high or two-high safety shell, one-high alignments often mean an extra run defender in the box which hurts this concept. Key the defensive tackles post-snap, if they are shooting gaps instead of reading blocks this scheme's cutback lane will be there. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side call for an immediate cutback read since the backside will be lighter. Nickel and dime sub packages with light boxes are where this play thrives, heavy fronts with extra linebackers or a run blitz will shut it down quickly.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into fronts with six or fewer defenders in the box to keep the numbers advantage in your favor.
Use the second back as a lead blocker by sending him through the play side gap first so your HB has a cleaner track to identify the cutback.
Against defenses that stack the box, motion the flexed receiver pre-snap to see if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety out, which opens up the cutback lane.
Pair this play with HB Counter and HB Lead Draw from the same set so defenses cannot key on a single blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages that remove run support.
