HB Base is the straight dive run out of Shotgun Go Go Twins Flex, sending the HB directly through the interior gap behind a standard down block scheme from the offensive line. The diagram shows the HB taking a direct downhill path off the mesh point with no misdirection, relying on the offensive line to create a vertical crease at the point of attack. This is a pure gap run play designed to attack light boxes and beats base fronts that are outnumbered inside, with the primary read being the initial hole created by the center and guard combo block before working backside if it clogs.
Defensive Reads
Identify the box count before the snap: if the defense has stacked seven or eight defenders in the box, this play loses its blocking advantage and gets stuffed quickly. Watch for a Mike linebacker sitting low and square pre-snap, since that alignment signals a run blitz or fast flow to the dive gap. Look for user-controlled defenders crashing down immediately off the snap, as aggressive user play at the second level can blow up the dive before the line finishes its combo blocks. Zone fronts with linebackers reading gaps will fill quickly against this concept, so this play works better against man or aggressive fronts than disciplined zone-read defenses. Against nickel or dime packages with lighter personnel in the box, HB Base becomes highly effective since fewer bodies are available to fill the interior gap.
Usage Tips
Call HB Base when the defense shows a light box of six or fewer defenders pre-snap, since the dive attacks straight downhill without needing extra gap control. Check the Mike linebacker depth before the snap: if he is stacked tight over the center expecting run, consider audibling to HB Lead Draw or Inside Zone Split instead to hit a different angle. Use this play early in a series on first and second down to establish tempo and set up play-action shots like PA Flood H-Corner later in the drive once the defense starts keying run fits. Pair HB Base with HB Counter in the same game plan so defenders committing hard to the initial dive path get gashed by the counter action on a later snap. In short yardage or goal line situations, this is a reliable conversion tool since it does not require reading defenders, just trusting the line to win the interior gap.
