Breakdown

Y Corner is a five wide empty formation route concept out of Shotgun Empty Trips Speed, built to attack the boundary with a vertical corner route from the inside trips receiver. The Y (slot receiver in the trips bunch) breaks up the seam and cuts to the corner, while the two outside trips receivers run a shallow drag and dig combo underneath to hold linebackers and clear the middle. The backside receiver runs a go route as a vertical stretch and the second backside receiver runs a short stick, giving the quarterback a five man route distribution with no run action or blocking assignments shown, making this a true dropback man beater designed to isolate the Y corner route against man coverage on the primary read.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing man coverage with the slot corner aligned tight on the Y receiver, this is the shell that gets exploited by the corner route Watch for a single high safety rotating late, if he sinks into the deep third to help on the corner route the quarterback needs to look off and work the underneath drag instead Key the weak side linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, if he sits on the shallow drag and does not carry the seam threat the Y corner will have a soft window Look for Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, this coverage takes away the corner route unless the corner defender bites hard on the underneath route Man blitz packages with the slot corner in press can be deadly for this play, so if you see extra rushers with man coverage on the trips side, be ready for a quick sight adjust or hot route the corner to a shorter option

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and medium to third and long when you need a defined vertical answer against man coverage

Check the slot cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing outside leverage or shaded low the Y corner route has a clean win against man

Motion is not needed here so use your pre-snap alignment read to decide whether to hot route the drag into a deeper dig if you see zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4

Pair this play with Flanker Under or Whip Unders earlier in a drive so defenders start jumping the shallow crossers, opening up the Y corner as a double move look later

Combine with Deep Cross out of the same set to give yourself a two play package that attacks both man and zone coverage without changing personnel or formation
