Wide Corners is an empty formation dropback pass that sends five eligible receivers into a full route distribution designed to stretch the field horizontally and vertically. Out of the Empty Bunch Tight look, the two bunch receivers on the left run vertical releases that break outward toward the sideline, the inside slot runs a corner route that sits behind them, and the two receivers stacked on the right side combine a short flat route with a deep corner route breaking to the boundary. With no running back in the backfield, this is a pure man beater built to create natural picks and separation out of the bunch, and the primary read progression starts with the outside corner route from the bunch side before working back to the flat and boundary corner combo on the opposite side.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks since Wide Corners is built to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 with natural rub picks off the bunch alignment. Watch cornerback depth on the bunch side, if they are playing tight man technique the outside corner route should win quickly on the release. Post-snap, key any user controlled defender flowing to the flat route on the right side, that lurk threat can bait a quick pass right into a jump ball situation. Zone shells with two deep safeties can be an issue if the safeties stay disciplined and rotate over the top of both corner routes, taking away the deep completions. Watch for linebackers spying the middle of the field, since Wide Corners has no natural check down or shallow crosser, a delayed blitz up the gut can pressure the quarterback before route concepts fully develop.
Usage Tips
Before the snap, check if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the bunch alignment since that tips man coverage and confirms this play is live.
Use motion or a hot route on the flat route to adjust timing against blitz-heavy fronts that try to jump the shallow crosser before it develops.
This play excels on second and long or third and medium because the multiple corner routes stress zone drop depth and give you a built in high low read against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.
Pair Wide Corners with Shallow Drags or Mesh Spot from the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical stretch and the underneath crossing combos, keeping linebackers honest.
Against aggressive man coverage, layer Wide Corners with Clear Deep on a later down to hold safeties deep and open up the underneath spacing concepts in this playbook.
