Quad Curls comes out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Tight with five receivers spread wide and no running back in the backfield. The two outside receivers on each side run vertical stems that break back into curls at intermediate depth, while the inside slot receivers push up and settle into curls closer to the numbers, giving four curl routes stacked at staggered depths across the field. There is no run action or blocking assignment shown since the formation is empty, and the QB reads from the sideline in to the boundary, working the outside curls first before coming back to the tighter inside curls underneath.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment: two deep safeties with off corners signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which struggle to cover four stacked curl breaks. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1, and dictates whether the QB should attack the deep middle void or settle for underneath curls. Post-snap, key the linebackers and nickel defenders dropping into curl-flat zones, since a well-timed user lurk can jump the inside curl and bait a turnover. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest counter to this play, since curls do not create vertical separation and defenders can trail routes into their breaks. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them shut this down fastest since there is no protection help from a back and curls take time to develop against underneath pressure.
Use this in third and medium to third and long situations where curl routes can settle in front of underneath defenders and pick up the sticks.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone with off corners and deep safeties, since curls sit down in soft spots against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.
Hot route the backside curl into a flat or quick out if you see man coverage across the board, since curls flatten out and lose separation against tight man technique.
Pair this play with Quick Slants or Spot Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and curl breaks that hold at the sticks.
Because there is no run threat or blocking scheme, avoid calling this on early downs against aggressive blitz packages unless you have a hot route ready to beat pressure.
