Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Tight lines up five receivers wide with no back in the backfield, creating instant spacing conflicts for the defense. The diagram shows two receivers crossing underneath in a mesh at the same depth just past the line, a spot route sitting down in the void near the sticks, a corner route climbing the sideline from the bunch, and a flat route releasing outside for width. This is a classic man beater that also stresses zone defenders through natural rub picks, with the primary read progressing from the mesh crossers underneath to the spot sitting down in the middle before working out to the corner and flat as the deep and outlet options.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two flat footed defenders sitting low near the mesh crossers, which signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops that leave the spot route open in the void. If linebackers or nickel defenders trail receivers through the bunch instead of sitting, that confirms man coverage, making the mesh rub the primary win condition. A single high safety with corners playing outside leverage suggests Cover 3, where the flat defender must widen for the flat route, opening the spot behind him. Aggressive underneath blitzers crashing the mesh area can be neutralized by getting the ball out quickly to the flat or spot before the rush arrives. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow mesh lane or lurking in the spot zone are the biggest threat, so scan for a defender breaking down early instead of biting on route fakes.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify if the defense shows man or zone by checking if defenders align over the bunch or bail into zone drops at the snap.
Against man coverage, trust the mesh crossers to create natural picks and separation, throwing to whichever receiver clears the traffic first.
Against zone, look immediately for the spot route settling into the underneath void, especially versus Cover 3 where the flat defender has to choose between the mesh and the spot.
Use the corner route as a big play answer when defenses sell out to stop the underneath mesh, since it exploits Cover 3 rotation and aggressive underneath jumps.
Pair this play with Mesh Cross or Spot Stick from the same set to keep defenders guessing on similar route stems, then hit Clear Deep or Bunch Trail as a change up if defenders start jumping the mesh routes.
