Breakdown

Spacing out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Tight sends five receivers into a horizontal stretch: the bunch side runs an out, a quick hitch, and a shallow flat route stacked underneath, while the backside iso receiver runs a deep out and the tight in-line X runs a sharp corner route (shown in red) attacking the flat to deep third. There is no run blocking since this is an empty backfield, and this is a pure timing based zone beater built to exploit soft spots in Cover 3 and Cover 4. The primary read progression starts with the flat/hitch combo on the bunch side, works to the backside out route, and comes back to the tight corner route as the vertical stretch against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side since Spacing thrives against soft zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 4 that leave stack conflict for underneath defenders. Key the flat defender and curl to flat zone player after the snap, since if they widen too fast for the flat route it opens the hitch sitting right behind them. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking the stack, since a smart user can jump the hitch or flat route and bait the quarterback into a pick six. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch stack is the best way to shut this down, since it disrupts route timing before receivers can separate at the top of their breaks. Disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat Spacing quickly since the quarterback has no run action or play fake to slow the pass rush, so track blitz indicators like walked up linebackers or overloaded fronts pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two deep safeties or one high, since Spacing is designed to punish Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells that leave stack windows underneath the deep zones.

Hot route the backside iso receiver into a deep comeback or streak if you diagnose man coverage, since the stock route can get squeezed by a press corner in man beater situations.

Use Spacing on second and medium or third and short to medium distances where the underneath sit routes give the quarterback an easy completion versus zone drops without needing to push the ball vertically.

Pair Spacing with Quick Slants or Mesh Spot from this same set so the defense cannot sit on the same horizontal stretch concept snap after snap, forcing linebackers to respect both shallow crossers and spacing sits.

If the defense starts jumping the flat and hitch routes with underneath zone drops, counter with Clear Deep or Wide Corners to hit the voided deep areas the defense creates by crashing down.
