RPO Glance Post out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close is a run-pass option that pairs an inside handoff look with a two-route pass concept behind it. The backside slot runs a quick glance route working inside toward the middle of the field while the outside receiver on that side stems vertically and breaks into a deep post over the top, stretching the field both short and deep off the same run action. The offensive line executes zone run blocking on the handoff, and the quarterback's read is the glance route first as the immediate RPO trigger, then the post as the explosive shot if the safety bites down on the run or the glance.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, a single high look tells you the post has room to work if the safety commits to run support. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the second level linebackers step up hard on run action the glance window opens instantly for the quarterback. This play beats man coverage that lacks a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone behind the linebackers. Zone coverage with a hard-hitting Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell that keeps a deep safety over the top can take away the post shot and force the offense into the quick glance only. Post-snap, key the flow of the defensive front, if defenders are selling out on run fits without honoring the RPO tag, expect the quarterback to pull and throw immediately rather than hand off.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box the RPO math favors pulling and throwing the glance immediately.
Use the glance as your rhythm throw against light boxes and save the post read for situations where you diagnose a single high safety cheating toward run support.
Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crosser if you are facing heavy zone drop coverage that clogs the short glance window.
Pair this play with RPO Zone Peek Glance in your call sheet so the defense cannot key run fits off formation alone, since both plays start with similar run action but attack different areas.
Best used on early downs (first or second and short to medium) where defenses are more likely to load the box, giving you the numbers advantage to pull and throw.
