Read Option out of the Shotgun Deebo Package is a true zone read run play built to attack the edge of a defense with a give or keep decision at the mesh point. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme flowing toward the play side while the quarterback reads the backside defensive end to decide whether to hand off to the running back on the inside zone track or pull the ball and attack the perimeter himself. This is a run play, not an RPO, so the quarterback progression is strictly ground based: identify the unblocked edge defender, then either give on his crash or keep and get vertical upfield if he sits or squeezes down the line.
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap for two point or wide nine alignment, which signals he is likely playing contain and setting up for a hard crash read by the offense. Post-snap, key the defensive end's first two steps: if he immediately attacks the running back's mesh point, the quarterback should pull and win the edge before the safety can rotate down. Identify man versus zone shells by checking safety depth and cornerback leverage before the snap, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with deep safeties tend to leave light boxes that favor this run. Look for a scrape exchange linebacker replacing the end's containment responsibility, which is the primary defensive answer that shuts this play down and forces a bad give read. Recognize overloaded run blitz fronts with extra defenders crashing downhill pre-snap, since these fronts erase both the give and keep options and should trigger an audible out of Read Option.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive end alignment before the snap to confirm he is a true read defender and not a scrape exchange linebacker disguising as one.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Read Option loses value the moment a defense stacks the box with an extra run fitter.
If the CPU or user defender crashes hard down the line every time regardless of the read, pull the ball on early downs to condition them, then give on money downs once they hesitate.
Pair this play with Y-off Power O and Y-off Power Read from the same set so the defense has to respect both gap scheme power runs and the zone read track, making linebacker fits harder to diagnose.
Best used on first and second down in normal or low box situations, and avoid calling it into obvious run blitz packages where a spy or scrape exchange defender is pre-set to erase the quarterback keep.
