Mesh Spot out of the Shotgun Deebo Package combines the classic mesh crossing routes underneath with a spot concept to the other side, giving you answers against both man and zone coverage on the same snap. Two receivers run shallow crosses that rub off each other to shake man defenders, while the spot side stacks a corner route, a hitch, and a flat route to attack zone drops underneath and over the top. This is a pass play with a primary progression that starts with the mesh crossers against man coverage, then works to the spot flat and hitch combo if you diagnose zone, making it a true dual purpose man and Cover 3 beater.
Pre-snap, look for two deep safeties versus one deep safety to determine if you are facing zone or man principles, this dictates whether you attack the mesh or the spot side first. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebacker drops signal zone coverage and tell you to work the spot concept's hitch and corner route immediately. If you see press corners with no safety help over the top, expect man coverage and prioritize the mesh crossers since the natural rub will separate against tight man leverage. User-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow mesh area or lurking underneath are the biggest threat to this concept, so if you see a defender flashing toward the crossers, redirect immediately to the spot side. Cover 3 with a hard spinning safety to the mesh side can clog the crossers, but this leaves the spot concept's corner route open behind a rolled up cornerback, so key on late safety rotation after the snap.
Check the safety alignment before the snap to decide which side of the concept to prioritize, single high shells favor the spot concept while two high shells often open up the mesh crossers against man leverage.
Use your hot routes to convert the spot corner route into a deep comeback if you see Cover 4 sitting underneath, this keeps the defense honest and prevents them from jumping the shorter routes.
Run this on early downs after establishing Outside Zone and Read Option from the same Deebo Package set, the run action forces linebackers to bite and widens the mesh window for your crossers.
On third and medium, target the spot flat route first since it settles quickly and gives you a safe checkdown while the mesh routes work to clear out linebackers.
Pair this play with WR Wheel in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to expect motion or crossing action, then punish overaggressive user defenders who jump routes.
