Y-off Power O out of the Shotgun Deebo Package is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard through the hole while the Y off man motions across the formation to add another blocker or misdirection element at the point of attack. The offensive line down blocks to create a wall, with the fullback or pulling guard leading through the hole to kick out the first defender past the double team. This is a pure run play designed to establish downhill physicality, and the primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then bounces to the pulling blocker's kick out block to determine whether the ball carrier should stick the run inside the double team or bounce it outside off the puller's block.
Identify the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety often means the linebackers are more willing to fill downhill which favors the offense's double team at the point of attack. Watch for defensive tackles slanting hard toward the play side gap, this can blow up the double team before the puller arrives and forces a quick bounce read. Key on the play side linebacker's first step, if he is reading run fits and stepping up quickly the ball carrier needs to trust the pulling blocker's kick out and bounce outside rather than trying to force it inside. Look for overloaded fronts or a nano blitz disguised at the snap, heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can beat this play before the double team is set. Man coverage with the corner following the Y in motion signals the defense is vacating a gap in the run fit, giving the offense a numbers edge to attack the same side as the motion.
Run this out of second and short or first down to keep defenses honest and off balance before mixing in the play-action shots this personnel group sets up. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box you are better off going to Mesh Spot or WR Wheel instead of forcing this into a stacked front. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing hard downhill on run fits you can user the ball carrier to bounce outside the pulling guard's kick out block for a bigger gain. Pair this with Y-off Power Read in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the straight give and the quarterback keep option out of the same look. Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is in man or zone, if a defender follows the Y across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can lean into the numbers advantage at the point of attack.
