TE Angle out of Shotgun Bunch Quads Close is a man beater built around a quick angle route from the inside bunch receiver, who breaks outside then snaps back inside underneath the linebackers to shake man coverage defenders. The backside receiver runs a deep shot post while the two remaining bunch receivers clear out with a corner route up the numbers and a shallow drag crossing the field, and the lone receiver on the closed side runs off the top with a deep go to hold the defense vertically. The primary read starts with the angle route out of the backfield or bunch for a quick, high percentage completion, then progresses to the shallow drag underneath before working to the deep shots on the post and corner if the angle is covered.
Defensive Reads
Bail your slot defender or nickel corner off the bunch immediately to jump the angle route before it breaks back inside, since that route is the quarterback's first look. Play zone coverage with a linebacker sitting in the underneath hook zone to take away both the angle route and the shallow drag in one drop. Show press man on the isolated receiver to disrupt the timing of the deep go route and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Watch for the corner route from the bunch, since it can stretch the deep third if your safety bites down on the angle or drag routes. Bring a delayed blitz off the edge to pressure before the angle route develops, since the route needs a beat to break open against disciplined man coverage.
Usage Tips
Target the angle route first against man coverage, especially versus linebackers who struggle to mirror the out and in break in space.
Use this as a rhythm throw on early downs to keep the offense ahead of schedule and set up shot plays later in the sequence.
Check the shallow drag as your second read if a linebacker jumps the angle route, since it clears the underneath zone quickly.
Pair this with Inside Post or Slant Spacing Dig from the same set so the defense has to respect the deep shots before you come back to the angle for easy yards.
Against zone coverage, hot route the angle receiver to a shorter option or bail to the drag, since zone defenders can sit on the angle break and undercut it.
