Breakdown

Slant Spacing Dig is a trips based passing concept run from Bunch Quads Close in Shotgun with 11 personnel. The isolated X receiver runs a quick slant to the boundary while the bunch side stacks a deep crossing dig, a short spacing curl, and an underneath spacing route that settles outside, creating a natural triangle stretch on one side of the field. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by putting three defenders in conflict at different levels and widths, and the primary read progression starts with the backside slant against man leverage before working to the dig sitting down in the middle void, then checking down to the spacing routes underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the bunch side, since a two high shell tips zone coverage and invites the dig throw once the safety rotates late. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat player closely, because if they widen with the spacing route it opens a throwing lane for the dig behind them. Man coverage with no help over the top on the backside slant is a green light to fire that route immediately before the defense can rotate a robber underneath. Look for a linebacker sitting in a hook or curl zone that can jump the dig route, since a disciplined zone defender who reads quarterback eyes can undercut that throw for a big hit or interception. Cover 3 with a sky safety or Cover 4 quarters shells are the biggest vulnerabilities here, while a well disguised Cover 1 with a rat linebacker in the middle can shut down the dig read and force the quarterback to check down.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap because this concept lives or dies on whether the safety rotates to the dig or stays deep, since a single high shell opens the window for the dig sitting behind the linebackers.

Use the backside slant as an instant answer versus man coverage or if you see a blitz, since it is a quick throw that beats press and off man alike.

Hot route the underneath spacing routes to sit or adjust depth versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 to make sure they land in the soft spot between the corner and safety.

Pair this play with Spot in your call sheet since both attack similar underneath zones but stress different levels, forcing defenders to guess between flat drops and hook drops.

Best used on second and medium to long distance when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, since the dig and spacing combo needs time to develop against soft coverage.
