Drag Under is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Bunch Quads Close designed to attack both man and zone coverage with horizontal stretch and a fast underneath crosser. The outside receiver from the bunch runs a deep vertical to clear space, the middle bunch receiver bends a deep out/pivot to occupy the flat defender, and the inside bunch receiver fires the drag route underneath across the formation as the primary read. Backside, the lone receiver runs a straight vertical to hold the safety, while the QB gets a quick five-man protection look with the running back and offensive line staying in to block. This is a man beater at its core, since the drag creates natural rub traffic through the bunch, but it also holds up against zone thanks to the two vertical clear-outs stressing the deep defenders.
Defensive Reads
Key the bunch alignment pre-snap, since three receivers stacked tight often signals a rub concept designed to spring someone open underneath against man coverage. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner spying the drag route immediately after the snap, as this is the primary target and lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone can jump the throw. Against zone coverage, check the depth of the underneath defenders in the curl-flat area, since a well-timed drop can undercut the crossing route before it reaches the sideline. If the defense shows two-high safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), the verticals will not stress the deep middle as much, so a robber or hook defender sitting in the drag lane can shut this route down. Man coverage with inside leverage on the drag defender is the biggest key to look for, since the offense is banking on natural traffic from the bunch to create separation against tight man technique.
Usage Tips
Read the drag route first every time, it is the primary progression and works against almost every coverage shell because of the natural pick action from the bunch alignment.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage by checking for tight press alignment on the bunch receivers, since the rub concept will spring the drag wide open against man.
If you see a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1), trust the two vertical routes to hold the deep defenders and hit the drag in stride for extra yards after catch.
Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the defense expects a quicker developing route, then mix in Inside Post from the same set to punish aggressive underneath defenders who jump the drag.
Pair Drag Under with QB Draw from this set to keep linebackers honest, since both plays start with similar action before diverging, forcing defenders to hesitate on run fits.
