Z Spot is a Cover 3 beater built out of the Bunch Offset Close look in Shotgun with 11 personnel. The bunch releases into a classic spot concept: the flat route sits underneath, the middle receiver curls into the hole, and the corner route clears vertically outside while the backside receiver runs a deep dig from the opposite side of the formation, with a check release running back kicking out to the flat on the weak side. The primary read is the hole defender in Cover 3: if the linebacker sinks to cover the curl, throw the flat, and if he jumps the flat, hit the curl sitting behind him in the hole.
Key the flat defender and the hole player at the snap, if you are sitting in Cover 3 zone with a user controlled linebacker, get depth immediately into the curl window before the throw develops. Watch for the corner route clearing vertically, this is designed to occupy the deep third defender and open the curl underneath, so a user controlled deep defender should stay disciplined and not bite on the corner. If the offense is running this out of Bunch Offset Close repeatedly, anticipate the flat and curl combination and consider a nano blitz or sim pressure package that collapses the pocket before the quarterback can work through his reads. Man coverage defenders should watch for natural rubs created by the bunch release, since the tight spacing can create momentary picks that spring the flat or curl route open against man beaters. Safeties should read the backside dig route as a companion piece, since a coordinated defense needs a robber or deep half player to account for that route while the underneath defenders lock down the bunch side.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high safety or two deep shell, since this concept is built specifically to attack the underneath rotation of Cover 3 and struggles more against true Cover 4 or Cover 2 with sticky corners.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if the Mike or Will is sitting shallow and cheating toward the flat, live throw the corner route or dig from the backside since the hole defender will be late getting depth.
Use the flat route as a built-in check-down against blitz looks, it releases quickly and gives you a answer if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge.
Pair this play with Y Trail or PA X Whip Crosser from the same set to keep defenders guessing, since both look identical out of Bunch Offset Close pre-snap but attack different levels and directions.
Best called on second or third and medium, where the spot concept's layered stretch on the hole defender consistently creates a clean throwing window.
