Quick Fork Zig

Breakdown

Quick Fork Zig is a quick-timing route concept out of Shotgun Box Y Off with 11 personnel that pairs a fork route (a receiver splitting into a vertical seam or corner look) with a zig route (a quick out-and-in breaking route) to attack the middle and flat of the defense almost immediately after the snap. This is a man beater at its core, designed to punish trail technique and press coverage by getting the zig runner open in a rhythm throw before defenders can recover, while the fork concept stresses zone defenders who have to choose between the seam and the flat. The primary read progression starts with the zig route in the shallow to intermediate area, then works to the fork route breaking vertically if the underneath defender jumps the quick out.

Defensive Reads

Check the cornerback alignment pre-snap, since tight press man alignment tells you the zig route will win quickly and you should jump the route with a user defender or bracket underneath Identify the safety shell before the snap, a single high safety with man coverage underneath is the most vulnerable shell to this concept because there is no help over the top on the fork route Watch for underneath zone defenders sitting in the flat, if a linebacker or nickel is spot dropping into the shallow zone he can undercut the zig route and force the quarterback to hold the ball Key on blitz packages that bring five or six rushers, since the quick timing of this concept is designed to beat the blitz, but a well timed nano blitz can disrupt the throw before the route develops User a lurk defender in the middle of the field to sit on the zig route crossing pattern, this is the single most effective way to bait the quarterback into a turnover read against this concept

Usage Tips

Get the ball out on time since this is a quick-game concept built for a fast release, so a one or two step drop mentality after the snap is essential

Diagnose man coverage pre-snap by checking if corners are lined up in press or tight man alignment, since the zig route is designed to win immediately against man defenders who cannot recover

If you see a two high safety shell with soft corners, prioritize the fork route since zone defenders sitting underneath will not be able to cover the vertical break

Use hot routes to convert the zig into a speed out if you are facing aggressive zone drops from linebackers, this keeps the timing intact while adjusting to the leverage of the defender

Pair this play with Quick Unders or Quick Short Post from the same set to keep defenses guessing on quick game concepts, then mix in Mid Zone or Inside Zone to punish defenses that sell out on pass rush timing

Best used on second and short or third and short to medium since the quick timing limits explosive plays but guarantees a high completion percentage against aggressive man coverage
