Breakdown

Flood is a classic three level sail concept out of Shotgun Box Y Off, designed to overload one side of the field vertically. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route, the inside slot man clears out on a deep vertical seam, and the flanker underneath sits down on a flat/out route, creating high low low leverage on the flat defender and deep third defender to the flood side. The backside receiver runs a comeback breaking outside, giving you a bailout option away from the flood. This is a Cover 3 beater at heart, attacking the deep third corner with the corner route while the flat route stresses the underneath defender, and your primary read progression goes corner to flat to the backside comeback if the flood side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment, since a single high safety with corners playing outside leverage is a strong indicator of Cover 3, which this play is built to exploit. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the corner route you have the flat route wide open underneath for an easy completion. Key the deep third defender to the flood side, if he stays home on the corner route the flat route should be uncontested, if he jumps the flat route the corner route will be open behind him. Look for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the flat or hook zone, a smart user player can rob the flat route, so be ready to reset to the corner route or backside comeback. Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since these coverages take away the deep corner route and force you to rely on the flat route and backside comeback for value.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high, since Flood is at its best against Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells where the deep third corner has to choose between the corner route and the flat route.

If you see two high safeties rotating down, be ready to work the backside comeback route quickly since the flood concept loses some of its high low advantage against Cover 2 and Cover 4 looks.

Hot route the flat route runner into a shorter option or spot if you are getting immediate pressure off the edge, this keeps a quick outlet available against blitz looks.

Use play action or RPO tags from this same Box Y Off set, like PA WR In or Quick Short Post, to keep linebackers honest before dialing up Flood on early downs.

On third and medium to long, trust the corner route against Cover 3 defenders who bite on the flat route, and user the corner route receiver to box out the corner in coverage.
