Mid Zone

Breakdown

Mid Zone is an inside zone run play out of the Shotgun Box Y Off formation with 11 personnel, designed to attack the interior gaps between the tackles. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, reading defensive line movement to determine cutback lanes, while the fullback or extra blocker seals the edge. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole, read the play side double team, and be ready to bounce backside if the frontside gap gets clogged by a linebacker filling downhill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: a single high safety with linebackers at normal depth signals base run fits, which favors your cutback lane. Watch for a heavy box count near the line of scrimmage, eight or nine defenders in the box means the defense is selling out to stop the run and you should consider an audible. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill without hesitation the frontside gap will close fast and you need to plan the cutback early. User-controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap as a lurk threat will blow this play up, so identify user movement before the snap and be ready to bounce it outside. Mid Zone struggles against gap or man blitz schemes with fast-flowing linebackers, but it beats base zone fronts and light boxes where the defense is playing pass-heavy personnel.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to check if the defense is running with the back, this tells you if you are facing man or a spy look on the running back.

Attack this play against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where the defensive tackles are not stacked heavy in the A gaps, since two-gapping tackles will clog your initial read.

Pair Mid Zone with Inside Zone in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on blocking scheme tendencies, alternating between the two keeps linebackers honest on their fill angles.

On early downs, run this on first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains, and mix in Counter Y afterward once linebackers start flowing hard to the play side.

If you see a heavy box with eight or more defenders crowded near the line, hot route your TE into a quick flat route or check to Quick Unders instead, since Mid Zone will get stuffed against overloaded fronts.
