Drive out of Shotgun Box Y Off is a classic double in-breaking route concept built to attack Cover 4 and other zone shells. The two inside receivers run a stacked drive combo, with the shallow crosser clearing underneath while the deeper in-route settles behind it, and the backside X runs a deep vertical to hold the safety while the outside receiver on the strong side runs a corner route to stretch the numbers. The single back checks protection out of the backfield before releasing on a shallow drag, giving the quarterback a clear high-low progression from the deep corner to the drive concept to the check release.
Defensive Reads
Look for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 and tells you the drive combo will have room to settle underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow drops mean they are keying the crossing routes and will jump the shorter in-cut, forcing you to work the deeper drive route instead. Identify user-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field, as a lurking safety or linebacker can undercut both drive routes and bait a costly interception. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the backside vertical, so check corner alignment and leverage before the snap to confirm man versus zone. Recognize blitz packages by counting defenders in the box, since Drive leaves the running back in as a check release option that can expose overloaded blitz looks if you get the ball out on time.
Usage Tips
Use Drive on second and medium to second and long when you expect zone coverage, since the crossing routes naturally settle into soft spots against Cover 4 and Cover 3.
Read the safeties pre-snap: if both are deep and the corners are off, expect zone drops and prioritize the drive combo over the middle of the field.
Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you see a two-high shell rotating hard to that side, this keeps the defense honest without abandoning the concept.
Pair Drive with Flood from this same set to keep defenses guessing between horizontal stretch and vertical crossing concepts, forcing linebackers to bite on run fits before you counter with the pass.
Use the check release from the running back as your answer versus disguised blitzes, since it gives the quarterback a quick outlet if the drive routes are jumped by underneath defenders.
