RPO Alert Bubble is a run-pass option built on an inside zone action with a bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. The offensive line and running back execute the zone blocking scheme while the slot receiver breaks outside and settles into a bubble route as the outside receiver stalk blocks the corner. The QB reads the flow of the play side linebacker or nickel defender post-snap: if that defender crashes down on the run action he pulls and throws the bubble, and if he stays wide to defend the bubble he hands off into the vacated inside zone lane.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot or nickel defender's initial step after the snap, if he flows hard toward the line of scrimmage the bubble is open in the flat. Check linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or shallow linebackers signal a run blitz that the RPO bubble can punish immediately. Man coverage on the slot receiver with no underneath help invites the bubble throw since the blocker in front creates natural space. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting on the bubble route shuts this down and forces the QB to trust the inside zone handoff instead. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the throwing lane, as a disciplined defender who reads the QB's eyes can jump the bubble route for a big hit or turnover.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when you want a low-risk conflict read that punishes overly aggressive run fits.
Check the slot defender pre-snap: if he is playing tight man or crashing hard on run action, key on the bubble to the flat.
If the defense shows a two-high shell with soft corners, favor the handoff since the alley will be light for inside zone.
Pair this with Read Option and Inside Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing on the same run action look before hitting them with the bubble RPO.
Snap this quickly after a no-huddle run to catch linebackers still thinking run fit and freeze the flow defender.
