Four Verticals out of Shotgun 5WR Trips sends four receivers vertically up the field while the backside X runs a solo vertical along the boundary, stretching the defense from sideline to sideline. Out of the trips side, the inside slot breaks his vertical into a deep crosser working across the middle, while the two remaining trips receivers stem into stacked verticals with the outside trips receiver climbing to a corner-post adjustment. This is a pass play designed as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, using vertical spacing to overload the deep safeties and attacking the seams before the zone drops can rotate over the top. With no blockers shown at receiver, the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working from trips into the void over the middle, then climbs to the seam receivers stacked behind him, and finishes on the backside X vertical if the defense rotates coverage away from the trips side.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to one high, since that dictates whether you play deep half technique or deep third technique. Post-snap, the deep crosser from the trips side is the first threat you must account for since he crosses the field into the vacated middle zone, so a user linebacker or lurking safety needs to sink and mirror him immediately. Watch for the stacked seam routes on the trips side stemming vertically, since Cover 2 corners must be disciplined enough to funnel these receivers inside to the safety rather than letting them split the numbers. Man coverage with no deep help is vulnerable to every vertical route on this concept, so blitzing man teams need a spy or a user defender to jump the deep crosser before it develops. A single high safety must gain depth quickly and read the quarterback's eyes toward the trips side, since one missed step allows the seam or crosser to separate for an explosive gain.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: two deep safeties split evenly signals Cover 2, and you want to attack the seams between the corner and safety with the stacked vertical routes.
If you see a single high safety, that is Cover 3, so target the deep crosser working across the middle since one safety cannot cover the entire width of the field.
Hot route the backside X into a comeback or dig if you are getting single coverage with no help over the top, since the pure vertical is easy to jam at the line against man coverage.
Use this play on obvious passing downs like second and long or third and long when the defense is more likely to sit in a two deep shell, since the vertical stress forces late safety rotation.
Pair this with Slants or Curl Flats earlier in a series to bait linebackers into shallow drops, then come back to Four Verticals once the defense starts sitting on short routes.
