Spacing out of Shotgun 5WR Trips deploys three receivers to the trips side running a stacked hitch, quick out, and slant/hook combination while the backside single receiver runs a hitch and the tight side X runs a corner route. There is no run blocking shown since this is an empty backfield concept, so all five eligible receivers are running horizontal stretch routes designed to sit down in the soft spots of zone coverage. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone beater that uses horizontal spacing to put stress on underneath defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the trips side hitch to out combo before working back to the backside hitch or the corner route against a two high shell.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender over the trips bunch, if he sinks into a hook zone immediately the quick out to the outside receiver is wide open. Key the flat defender on the trips side, if he widens too fast to the out route the hitch behind him becomes the easy check down. Against Cover 4, read the corner on the backside single receiver, if he plays soft off the line the hitch sits down in his cushion for a free completion. User linebackers who spy the middle hook zone can jump the slant portion of the trips combo, so if you see the Mike linebacker cheat toward that route, redirect to the corner route on the tight side X. This play struggles against man coverage with underneath blitzes since there is no check release protection, so if you see corners in press alignment with a linebacker showing blitz, expect quick pressure before routes develop.
Usage Tips
Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see two high safeties with soft corners this play flourishes because zone defenders have to declare who takes the underneath flat and hook zones.
Use the trips side quick out as your first read on third and short since it settles in the void between the corner and the flat defender in most zone shells.
Hot route the backside single receiver into a speed out if you anticipate man coverage since the hitch alone struggles to separate against press man.
Pair this play in sequence with Four Verticals and Flood from the same set so defenders who key in on the shallow spacing routes get burned over the top once they start jumping the underneath zones.
Run this on early downs against zone heavy defenses to bait linebackers into shallow drops, then punish that tendency later with Inside Cross or Levels for explosive plays.
