Breakdown

QB Draw out of Shotgun 5WR Trips shows five receivers releasing vertically to sell a dropback pass before the QB takes a delayed handoff-style run through the middle of the formation. The offensive line pass sets initially then climbs to the second level, baiting pass rushers upfield and creating a running lane once the defensive line commits to the rush. This is a designed QB run built to punish aggressive four man rushes and man coverage that turns receivers' backs to the backfield, with the primary read being the initial lane between the guards before bending it based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles crashing hard upfield off the snap, that penetration is exactly what this play is designed to exploit Man coverage shells with corners and safeties turning their backs to the line of scrimmage are the biggest green light, since no defender is reading the backfield Spy defenders or a linebacker sitting in the middle of the field at a shallow depth will blow this play up immediately, so check for a stacked or plugged middle linebacker pre snap Zone coverage with underneath linebackers staying square to the quarterback rather than dropping deep will close the running lane quickly User controlled defenders lurking around the center or spying the quarterback are the clearest sign to abandon this call and go to a pass concept instead

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations like third and long when defenses expect a dropback and rush hard upfield

Check the box count pre snap, if the defense has five or fewer in the box this draw has a numbers advantage against the interior

Use hot routes to keep at least two receivers on quick routes underneath so the defense cannot sell out on the run without giving up an easy check down option later in your play sequence

Pair this with Curl Flats or Stick from the same 5WR Trips set to establish a passing rhythm first, then dial up QB Draw once linebackers start sitting in shallow zones or blitzing off the edge

Delay your run button press slightly after the snap to let the O-line get into their pass pro sets and let the defensive line fully commit upfield before accelerating through the hole
