Inside Zone Split is a pure run play out of Pistol Strong Slot with 21 personnel on the field. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping in unison to one side while the fullback (or second back) leads through the line and the running back takes a split zone track behind the quarterback, reading the frontside double team before deciding to bend the run or press downhill. This is a zone run designed to beat gap-heavy fronts and slanting linebackers, with the primary read progressing from the frontside double team combo block to the backside cutback lane if the play defender flows too hard.
Key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit, if they get washed down by the double team the cutback lane opens immediately Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders which signals a run blitz designed to beat inside zone concepts Identify if the strong safety is cheating down into the box pre-snap, this often means the defense is selling out to stop the split zone action Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the fullback's lead block, this leaves the backside cutback wide open Against a slanting front or odd stack fronts this play struggles, expect blown up gaps if the defensive tackles are shooting gaps aggressively
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box
Use the fullback lead action to identify if the defense is bringing an extra hat downhill, and if so plan to bounce the cutback lane
Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone coverage before the snap
Pair this with HB Power O and HB Counter from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one blocking scheme
Run this on early downs (first and second) to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and PA Boot Lt or PA Power O off the same look
