This is a straightforward gap scheme run play, not a play-action or RPO look, designed to move a puller through the point of attack for the running back to follow. The primary read progression starts with the puller identifying the first threat off the edge, then the HB reads the puller's block to decide whether to press the hole downhill or bounce outside if the alley closes.
Defensive Reads
Stacked boxes with eight or more defenders near the line signal that Power O will struggle to find room, so switch to Double Flares or Jet Touch Pass to punish the aggression. Watch for a linebacker crashing hard down the line pre-snap since that is a blitz key that can blow up the pulling lead blocker before he reaches the hole. Man coverage with corners playing tight outside leverage tells you the edge defenders will squeeze the run fits quickly, so be ready to cut back if the play side alley closes. Identify any user-controlled defender lurking in the backfield or spying the mesh point, since a smart user can jump the pulling blocker's path and blow up the play design. Zone shells with safeties sitting deep and linebackers reading gaps rather than blitzing generally allow the natural flow of this power scheme to develop cleanly.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want to establish tempo and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots. Check the box count pre-snap and only run it into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since Power O relies on winning numbers at the point of attack. Watch linebacker depth before the snap: if they are crashed downhill expecting run, consider hot routing the TE into a checkdown flare instead. User the lead blocker manually to smash the first unblocked defender in the hole, since AI blocking on the puller can whiff against fast-flowing linebackers. Pair this with PA Power O and PA Boot Lt from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the boot pass off identical formation and blocking flow, keeping linebackers and safeties frozen.
