Read Option out of Pistol East Tight is a base zone run play with the QB and HB stacked in the pistol alignment behind a balanced offensive line with a tight end attached on the play side. The diagram shows the HB sliding to the right on a zone track while the QB reads the play side end or OLB to decide between handing off or pulling the ball on the keeper. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge with zone blocking up front, not a play-action or RPO look based on what is drawn here.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for a defensive end or OLB sitting wide on the play side edge since that defender is the actual read key for this concept. If the defense shows a 4-3 under front with the end crashing hard inside, expect the QB to pull and attack the alley, so user your play side linebacker to stay disciplined on the edge. Watch for a run blitz or nano blitz look with a linebacker stacked tight to the line pre-snap, since fast penetration can blow up the zone track before the mesh point is even read. Zone coverage shells with safeties rotated down into the box are the biggest counter to this play because they add a numbers advantage against the edge. Post-snap, keep an eye on backside pursuit from linebackers since a disciplined backside contain defender can chase down the keeper if the QB tries to bounce it outside.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the offense on schedule and stay balanced.
Pre-snap, check the box count and look for an extra defender crashing down on the play side edge since that is the key to your dive versus keep decision.
Manually control the QB after the snap so you can pull the ball yourself if the defense sells out on the HB and leaves the edge unblocked.
Pair this with HB Power O and HB Zone Wk from the same set so the defense cannot key blocking direction based on your play call.
Against aggressive defenses that crash hard off the edge, this play punishes over pursuit by letting the QB keep and get to the boundary quickly.
