HB Power O out of Pistol East Tight is a gap scheme run play built to move a defender off the point of attack with a lead blocker. The play art shows the offensive line stepping down to the play side while the backside guard pulls through the hole, with a fullback or lead blocker (the diagonal red route) leading into the alley to seal the edge defender or force a linebacker fit. The HB reads the pulling blocker and downhill combo blocks, hitting the hole once the lead blocker identifies the force defender to kick out or wrap on. This is a pure run play, not a play-action look, and its primary read progression is patience behind the pulling guard, letting the lead blocker create the crease before pressing north.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for a stacked front with the Mike linebacker sitting inside the tackle box, since this clogs the pulling lane and forces a negative play. Watch safety alignment: a single high safety cheating toward the play side call side often signals a run blitz or crash call that can beat the kick-out block before it develops. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home can blow up the pulling guard's angle. Look for linebackers flowing fast to the play side gap, as an overaggressive fill from the Will or Sam linebacker can be sealed by the lead blocker and turned into a cutback lane. This play struggles against a heavy front with extra defenders stacked in the box (eight-man fronts) or when the defense calls a gap-exchange blitz that has a second defender scraping to replace the crashing end.
Usage Tips
Use HB Power O against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box, since the pulling guard and lead blocker need clean lanes to work. Check the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap: if he is stacked tight behind the nose, the lead blocker will have a tougher time sealing him, so consider audibling to HB Zone Wk instead. This play excels on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to establish tempo and set up play-action shots later in the drive. Pair it in your play-calling sequence with Read Option or TE Option from the same East Tight Pistol set so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation alone. If the user jumps the pulling guard's lane with an aggressive linebacker blitz, bounce the HB outside off the double team rather than forcing it into a stacked front.
