HB Inside out of the Jumbo Near formation is a heavy personnel dive run designed to attack the interior gaps behind extra blocking. The diagram shows the fullback and offensive line executing down blocks and double teams up front while the halfback takes a direct downhill path through the A or B gap. This is a pure between the tackles run play with no pass options, built to gain tough yards and control tempo rather than beat man or zone coverage. The primary read is the halfback keying the frontside double team, pressing the mesh point, and reading the first wave of linebacker flow before deciding on the cutback lane.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth since stacked fronts with linebackers crowding the line will beat this play by filling gaps before the double teams can seal them. Watch for safeties creeping down into the box, which signals run support and a potential run blitz aimed at the interior gaps. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and see if they are two gapping or getting movement, since a strong interior push shuts down the cutback lane completely. User players should shoot gaps aggressively rather than reading blocks, since this play develops quickly and does not allow linebackers time to diagnose. Look for the mike linebacker's flow, if he overpursues to the play side the backside cutback becomes the primary path to daylight.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a physical downhill run to convert third or fourth and short. Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the extra blockers only help so much against stacked fronts. Pair it with FB Dive and FB Dive Weak from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which gap you are attacking, then hit PA Strong Flow off the same personnel look once the defense starts crashing hard on the dive action. Take what the line gives you and trust the fullback lead block instead of trying to force the ball to the play side if the backside cutback lane opens up. Avoid calling this on passing downs since the Jumbo Near personnel tips run heavily and invites an aggressive run blitz.
