TE Hitch Out is a three-man route concept out of the Jumbo Near formation's 23 personnel, designed to attack the perimeter with quick, high-percentage throws. To the left, a receiver runs a deep out that breaks toward the sideline, giving a vertical stretch option. To the right, the tight end runs a quick out to the flat while another receiver runs a corner route up the seam, forming a natural high-low read on that side of the field. The lone back stays in to block or check the middle, and this play works as a zone beater by using horizontal spacing to put stress on flat and deep zone defenders in a hurry-up throw game.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender's initial drop, if he sits on the tight end's out route, the corner route behind him becomes the primary window. Check safety depth pre-snap, a two-high shell suggests the deep out on the left side will have more room since the corner isn't rotating down. Man coverage defenders following the tight end out of the backfield alignment signal a natural rub or pick opportunity on the out and corner combo. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat zone, as that indicates a lurk threat designed to jump the tight end's out route. Blitz packages that send extra rushers up the middle can be countered by the quick out timing, but watch for a delayed blitz off the edge that could disrupt the corner route's timing window.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing zone or man leverage on the tight end, since the quick out is the primary hot route against soft zone coverage.
Use the corner route as your first read versus single-high safety looks where the flat defender has to respect the out route underneath.
This play pairs well with FB Dive Weak and FB Dive out of the same formation to keep defenses honest against the run before hitting them with the quick-hitting out routes.
Call this on early downs or third-and-short since the quick out and hitch combo give you a safe, high-percentage completion window.
Combine with PA Strong Flow to disguise the run action and draw linebackers up, opening up the deep out on the backside for a bigger gain.
