Z Spot out of the Near Close 21 personnel set is a classic Cover 3 beater built on the Spot concept combined with two clear-out routes. From the diagram, the two backs run vertical clear-outs to opposite sides of the field (one deep flag/go to the left, one deep corner route to the right) while the tight end runs a quick flat route and the Z receiver runs a hitch/curl over the middle underneath, with a slot man running the classic short spot route to settle in the void left by the clear-outs. There is no visible pulling lineman or edge blocker shown, confirming this is a straight drop back pass with the offensive line staying home in protection. The primary read progression starts with the spot route sitting in the flat-to-hook window, then works to the curl/hitch in the middle if the underneath defender jumps the spot, and finally to the deep clear-out routes if the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 static zones and a linebacker or safety leaves a seam.
Defensive Reads
Cover 3 with a curl-flat defender that stays too wide will leave the spot route open in the hook zone, so key the underneath zone defender's initial break to decide between the spot and the curl. User-controlled linebackers dropping to the middle hook zone are the biggest threat to the spot route, so watch for a defender sitting flat-footed in that area pre-throw. Man coverage on the tight end and Z receiver is vulnerable to the natural pick and rub created by the spot route crossing with the flat route, making this a strong answer to Cover 1 or Cover 0 man pressure. Two-deep safety shells (Cover 2 or Cover 4) can bracket the deep clear-out routes on both sides, which shuts down the vertical option and forces the quarterback to live underneath with the spot and curl. Watch for a corner blitz or nano blitz off the edge, since the offensive line stays in to protect on this play and there is no extra blocker to pick up a fast overload rush from the tight end's side.
Usage Tips
Look for two deep safeties or a single high safety pre-snap to confirm whether the deep clear-out routes will actually stretch the defense or just be decoys against Cover 2 or Cover 3.
Hot route the tight end's flat route into a quick out or speed out against man coverage if you see a linebacker walked up over him, since the flat conflict is what opens the spot route underneath.
Use this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) to keep the defense honest, then sequence into Post Drag or Spacing on the next snap once the defense adjusts its underneath zone drops to take away the spot.
Against blitz-heavy defenses, check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap: if he is showing blitz, consider audibling to HB Inside or FB Dive to punish an overcommitted front instead of holding the ball for the spot to develop.
Combine Z Spot with PA Strong Flow later in a series once the defense starts sitting on the underneath spot route, since the run fake off the same formation freezes linebackers and opens the deep clear-out routes for real this time.
