Breakdown
Spacing out of Near Close (21 personnel) stretches the field horizontally with a five-man route distribution designed to attack zone coverage. The play-side receiver runs a deep out to the sideline, the TE runs a quick out/flat route underneath, and the backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field, while a defender in red shows a blitz threat off the edge. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater that sits receivers in the horizontal voids of zone defenses, with the primary read progressing from the flat route underneath to the deep out, then working back to the backside drag if the zone flows away from the boundary.
Defensive Reads
Read the deep safety alignment before the snap since two safeties deep signals Cover 4 or Cover 2, both of which Spacing exploits with its horizontal stretch. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if a linebacker or nickel sinks into the flat zone too quickly, the deep out route will be sitting open behind him. Man coverage with no help over the top shuts this play down fast since the routes are spaced for zone voids, not for creating natural separation against tight man leverage. Key the edge defender shown in red as a blitz threat, if the offensive line picks him up cleanly the quarterback has time to work through the full progression, but a free rusher off that edge forces an early checkdown to the drag route. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the intermediate throwing lane, since Spacing's outs and drags can get picked off if the user jumps the route with a lurking linebacker or safety.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing zone or man leverage since Spacing is at its best against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with soft flat defenders. If the corner is playing off with outside leverage, hot route the deep out to a hitch or slant to attack a hard press look. Use this on third and short to medium distances where the underlying flat and drag routes give you an easy high-percentage completion versus zone drops. Pair Spacing with PA Strong Flow to keep linebackers honest since both plays start with similar backfield action before Spacing shows out. Sequence this with Post Drag later in a series once the defense starts jumping the flat routes, since Post Drag attacks the same underneath zones with a deeper crossing route to hit behind aggressive linebackers.
