Nfl Onside Kick 2

Kickoff·Personnel not specified

Overview

Nfl Onside Kick 2 is a special teams set inside the Kickoff formation, and it exists for exactly one purpose: recovering the ball when you have no other option. Unlike the standard deep kickoff sets that spread coverage men evenly across the width of the field to defend the return, this set overloads bodies toward one side of the field and pulls the kicker's approach angle in tight. The lone play, Speed Onside, is built around a low, driven kick that skips off the turf and travels the minimum ten yards before the overload side crashes down on the recovery point.

Strengths

  • Speed Onside gets the ball past the ten yard mark faster than a lofted dribble kick, which shrinks the window the receiving team's front line has to secure it cleanly
  • The overloaded alignment stacks multiple coverage men at the recovery point, so a bobbled ball frequently ends up in a pile your players win
  • You can user control a coverage man pre snap and manually attack the bounce point instead of trusting AI pursuit angles
  • Aiming the kick meter toward the sideline hash forces the return team's edge player to field it while moving, which raises the drop rate
  • Works as a change up if you have already shown a standard onside look earlier in the game and the opponent has adjusted his hands team alignment

Weaknesses

  • Every competitive opponent knows an onside kick is coming in the situations where you would call it, so the surprise element is essentially zero
  • A clean recovery by the receiving team hands them the ball near midfield or better, which is often a game ending swing
  • The flat trajectory means a bad kick meter release can send the ball out of bounds or fail to travel ten yards, both of which are penalized
  • The overload side is completely undefended if the return team recovers and cuts back, giving them free yards on the return
  • No fake or pooch variation exists in this set, so you cannot disguise intent with the play art

Usage Tips

Save this for two minute drill situations where you are down more than one score and burning the clock on a deep kick ends your comeback

Check the receiving team's front line pre snap: if they have their hands team bunched in the middle, aim your kick meter toward the outside hash where coverage is thinnest

Take user control of a coverage man on the overload side and sprint at the recovery point instead of letting the AI handle pursuit

Release the power meter in the low to mid range so the ball bounces rather than skids straight through the front line

If you are trailing by exactly three with time on the clock, kick deep instead and trust your defense, because a failed onside here removes any chance at a field goal drive
