Landingzone Heavy Kickoff Right is a special teams kickoff play, not an offensive route concept or defensive scheme. The kicker directs a heavy, high-arcing boot toward the right hash to pin the return unit deep and shorten the field for the coverage team. The primary read progression for the coverage unit is to sprint downfield in lane assignments, locate the return man's landing spot on the right side, and converge to force a fair catch or limit yards after catch.
Watch the return man's depth and positioning before the snap to anticipate whether he will field the kick or let it drop for a touchback. Key on the wall blockers forming up on the right side, since that tells you where the return team expects the ball to land. Post-snap, track your outside lane runners to make sure they stay in their assigned rugby-style lanes and do not get walled off. If the return team shows a heavy left-side setup, this kick to the right exploits the lack of numbers on that side. Watch for a wedge or double-team block forming near the landing zone and adjust your fastest coverage defender to attack that gap first.
Use this kick when you want to flood coverage to the right sideline and force the returner to make a decision away from his blocking wall.
Pre-snap, check the return team's setup and see if they are stacking blockers on the left, which makes the right-side heavy kick more effective at avoiding lanes.
Combine this with Landingzone Heavy Kickoff Left in sequence so the return team cannot predict which side the ball will land on.
On short fields or after a defensive stop, use this kick to pin deep and rely on your coverage unit's lane discipline rather than an onside look.
