Landingzone Heavy Kickoff is a special teams kickoff play designed to pack extra hangtime and coverage numbers toward the landing zone, using a heavier kicking formation to limit big return lanes. The blocking and coverage scheme sends the kicking team's cluster of coverage defenders downfield in lanes that funnel the returner toward the middle of the field where help defenders can converge. There is no route progression here since this is a kickoff, so the primary read is the kicker aiming for the landing zone depth while coverage defenders key the returner's initial angle and fill their assigned lanes.
Key the returner's first two steps immediately after the catch, since heavy coverage lanes are built to funnel him inward and any hesitation on your end opens a crease. Watch for the return team stacking blockers on one side pre-snap, this tells you which direction the wall return will try to spring the returner and lets you overplay that lane. Track your gunners and coverage men staying in their lanes rather than crashing early, discipline here is what shuts down wall returns and reverse attempts. If the returner catches the ball short of the landing zone due to a mishit kick, sprint downhill immediately since your coverage numbers advantage disappears the shallower the catch point. Be alert for a return team faking a return and setting up a fair catch bait, do not let your coverage unit overrun the football and give up a cheap penalty or big return on a broken tackle.
Use this kickoff variant when you want to force a touchback or a short return by dropping the ball deep into the landing zone with heavy hangtime.
Check the return team's setup pre-snap, if they are showing a heavy return look with blockers stacked to one side, this kickoff still gives you lane integrity because of the added coverage numbers.
Aim your kick placement toward the numbers or deep middle depending on which returner looks more dangerous, this lets you dictate the angle they have to take.
