Onside Small

Kick Return·Personnel not specified

Overview

Onside Small is a special teams recovery set inside the Kick Return formation, not a traditional offensive set, and it exists for exactly one situation: the opponent is kicking onside and you need to secure the ball. Unlike standard Kick Return sets that spread deep returners at the goal line and stack a wedge at the 20, Onside Small crowds bodies toward the kicking team's hash and pulls almost everyone up near the restraining line. The alignment is compressed and front-loaded so your recovery unit meets the ball as soon as it travels the required ten yards, rather than letting it bounce free into a scrum you do not control.

The personnel here is the tell. Onside Small pulls sure-handed players (receivers, tight ends, and defensive backs with high Catching and Carrying) into the front wall instead of leaning on special teams blockers. Hands Team is the lone play in the set, and it is built around securing possession first and worrying about return yardage second. Where a normal return set isolates a returner in space, this one isolates ball skills at the point of contact, which matters because Madden resolves onside recoveries largely through proximity and catching traits on the closest players.

Where Onside Small differs from the wider Onside look is the spacing. The compressed front is designed for the short, hard driven kick that squirts along the turf, so you get more bodies in the immediate five to fifteen yard window. The tradeoff is obvious: if the kicking team pooches it over the front wall or drives it deep to the sideline, you have far less coverage behind your first line and very little chance to field the ball cleanly.

Strengths

  • Maximum body count in the ten to fifteen yard recovery window, which is exactly where CPU and user onside kicks are most often placed
  • Hands Team swaps special teams blockers for high Catching and Carrying players, improving your odds of a clean secure instead of a live ball scramble
  • Compressed spacing means fewer gaps for a hard driven low kick to squirt through untouched
  • User controlling the man closest to the kicker's target hash lets you attack the ball early rather than waiting on AI reaction
  • Recovering here flips field position immediately since your front wall is already inside the kicking team's half of the return zone

Weaknesses

  • Almost no depth behind the front wall, so a pooch or high hanging kick over your first line can drop into empty grass
  • Sideline placement stresses the compressed alignment badly, especially if the kicker angles it toward the far numbers
  • If the kick is booted deep on purpose (a fake onside look), you are returning with hands players instead of your normal return unit and blocking wedge
  • Defensive backs and receivers pulled onto the front wall are poor tacklers and blockers, so any recovery by the kicking team turns into free yardage
  • Committing to this set telegraphs that you expect an onside, and a savvy opponent can audible to a deep kick to punish the alignment

Usage Tips

Only bring this out when the math forces the opponent into an onside: late fourth quarter, two score deficit for them, or after a failed two point try with under two minutes

Read the kicking team's pre-snap alignment before committing, because an overloaded strong side usually signals which hash the kick is headed toward

User control the front line player on the side the kicker is loaded toward and drive toward the ball the instant it is live instead of trusting the AI angle

If the opponent shows a normal kickoff alignment with a full spread coverage unit, audible back to a standard Kick Return set so you are not returning with hands players

Secure the ball first and only look upfield once possession is confirmed, since fumbling a recovery in this alignment usually hands the opponent the ball inside your own forty

Practice the timing in Skills Trainer or a solo game so you know how early you can jump the ten yard restraining line without drawing a penalty
