Onside Base is the recovery set inside Kick Return, and it has nothing in common with the standard return alignments you call on a normal kickoff. Instead of dropping deep returners at the goal line and stacking a wedge, Onside Base pulls your entire unit up to the restraining line area and packs bodies into the hands zone where a short kick can legally be recovered. The single play here, Base Onside, is built to defend the ten yard mark: front line personnel are positioned to attack the ball the instant it travels far enough, with a secondary layer behind them to clean up bounces, squibs, and anything that skips past the first wave.
Only call Onside Base when the situation actually demands it: trailing by one score late in the fourth, no timeouts remaining, or a two possession deficit inside two minutes where you need the ball immediately.
Watch the opponent's hands team indicator pre snap. If they show a normal kickoff alignment and you are in Onside Base, you are gambling on field position for nothing, so back out to a standard Kick Return set.
Take user control of a front line player near the middle of the formation rather than the edge, since most onside kicks in Madden are driven at the ten yard mark straight ahead and you want the shortest reaction distance.
Do not dive at the ball the instant it moves. Wait until it clearly crosses the ten yard threshold, then attack, because early contact hands the kicking team a penalty and a fresh set of downs.
Late in a game where you still hold timeouts, prefer a standard return and trust your defense. Onside Base should be your last resort, not your first reaction to a deficit.
