Landingzone Nfl Kick Return

Kick Return·Personnel not specified

Overview

Landingzone Nfl Kick Return is the special teams return package inside the Kick Return formation, and it is built around the modern kickoff landing zone rules rather than traditional deep return alignment. Instead of spreading blockers across the 40 and 45 yard lines to build a wall, this set stacks the setup zone with your blocking unit and places returners inside the landing zone, which means every play in the set is designed to attack a kickoff that is legally forced to be returned. That structural difference is what separates it from standard Kick Return sets: you are not choosing between a return and a fair catch, you are choosing a lane and a blocking scheme.

The personnel alignment is the key. Landingzone Nfl Kick Return groups your blocking wedge tight and gives you both a standard and a Heavy variant of the same directional concepts, which is effectively a personnel and blocking weight decision made pre-snap. The Heavy plays (Landingzone Heavy Kick Return, Landingzone Heavy Return Middle New, Landingzone Heavy Return Middle Trap, Landingzone Heavy Return Right, Landingzone Heavy Return Left) commit more bodies to the point of attack and are your best fit when you are running a physical, high block rating unit. The standard plays (Landingzone Return Middle New, Landingzone Return Middle Trap, Landingzone Return Left, Landingzone Return Right) hold blockers wider and depend more on your returner's Speed, Acceleration and Elusiveness to hit the seam before it closes.

The matchup advantage you are isolating here is your returner against the coverage unit's second wave. Middle Trap concepts are the money plays: they invite the kick coverage team to overpursue outside, then wall them off and open an interior crease, which is where a high Juke or Truck returner turns a 25 yard start into a 45 yard flip in field position. Return Left and Return Right isolate the boundary and are best used when you have already identified which side of the coverage unit is undisciplined or when you want to force the ball toward your sideline before contact.

Strengths

  • Middle Trap concepts (Landingzone Return Middle Trap and Landingzone Heavy Return Middle Trap) punish coverage units that overpursue outside, walling defenders off and creating an interior seam that is the highest explosive play rate in the set.
  • Heavy variants of every directional return give you a pre-snap personnel and blocking weight decision, so you can match a physical coverage team without leaving the set.
  • Directional returns (Left, Right, Heavy Left, Heavy Right) let you dictate which sideline the play finishes on, which matters for both field position and keeping your returner away from a user-controlled tackler.
  • Because the alignment is built for landing zone kickoffs, you are almost never stuck with a dead fair catch, so this set converts touchbacks and short kicks into real field position gains.
  • User controlling the returner and pressing the sprint trigger only after clearing the first blocking level turns average blocking into consistent 25 to 35 yard starts.

Weaknesses

  • A hard directional kick away from your called return (kicking left into a Return Right call) leaves your blocking scheme flowing the wrong direction and strands the returner with no wall.
  • User-controlled coverage defenders on the kicking team can shoot the exact interior gap that Middle Trap is designed to create, and a skilled user will beat the trap block before it sets.
  • Heavy variants sacrifice edge width, so a fast coverage unit that stays in its lanes can constrict the play and hold you to a short return.
  • Low Block Shed and Impact Blocking ratings on your special teams unit make this whole set look flat, and depth chart neglect at ST is the most common reason these plays underperform.
  • Fumble risk climbs when you force a middle return into a stacked box instead of taking the ball down, which is a game losing mistake in close contests.

Usage Tips

Set your special teams depth chart before you rely on this set: put your highest Speed and Elusiveness back at KR and your best Impact Blocking players in the blocking slots, because play art cannot fix bad personnel.

Default to Landingzone Return Middle Trap or Landingzone Heavy Return Middle Trap as your base call, then flip to a directional return once you have identified which side of the opponent's coverage unit is breaking down.

Use the Heavy plays when the opponent is kicking short and flat into the landing zone, since you need bodies at the point of attack rather than width.

Read the kick trajectory pre-catch and be willing to abandon the called lane: if the wall has not formed by the time you cross the 25, get vertical, secure the ball and take the yardage.

In a close fourth quarter, prioritize ball security over the explosive play, and only push the middle trap when you actually need the field position swing.
