HB Stretch out of I Form H Pro (21 personnel) is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB to the edge before cutting upfield. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally with zone blocking steps, while the FB leads through the hole to seal the edge defender, and the HB takes a lateral path behind the line before deciding to bounce outside or cut inside based on the block flow. This is a pure zone run scheme, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the edge defender's leverage, then works inside to the first wave of linebacker flow to find the cutback lane.
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker leverage at the snap since Stretch is designed to beat aggressive edge defenders who overpursue. Key on the middle linebacker's initial step, if he flows hard with the zone action, the cutback lane opens up for the HB. This run beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that lack disciplined edge containment, but struggles against defenses that set the edge with a contain rusher. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing down hard on zone flow, since that signals a keyed run defense that will blow up the bounce. Against stacked boxes or run blitzes with linebackers crowding the line pre-snap, expect minimal push and consider audibling to a pass concept instead.
Attack defenses with light boxes or six men in the box before the snap since Stretch needs numbers advantage on the perimeter.
Use the HB's cutback ability by holding the run button momentarily to let the zone flow develop, then commit to either the bounce outside or a hard cut upfield.
Pair this play with HB Counter Wk in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction since both plays start with similar lateral footwork.
Avoid calling Stretch into stacked fronts with extra defenders crashing downhill, as the lack of a lead blocker beyond the FB makes it vulnerable to fast flow defenses.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to keep play-calling balanced and set up Short Slants or Curls off the same personnel look.
