PA Scissors runs a play-action fake from the I Form H Pro 21 personnel look, holding the run fake to set the pass pro before the routes develop. The diagram shows a scissors concept on the right side where the TE runs a deep corner route crossing over the WR's deep post while the outside WR from the two-receiver side runs a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline, and the near-side WR runs a flat route underneath the crossing routes. The backside X receiver runs an out and up sit route breaking outside. This is a play-action man beater built on the crossing scissors action, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crossing post route off the TE's corner break, then works down to the shallow flat route as the checkdown against underneath coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety depth before the snap: if both safeties sit deep in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, the crossing routes from the scissors concept will have room to work between the numbers before help arrives. Key the linebackers at the snap since a disciplined defense that does not bite on the play-action fake will get depth quickly and can jump the shallow flat route or undercut the crossing routes. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow lurk or hook zone, since that defender can jump the flat route or the underneath crossing route if the quarterback rushes the read. Man coverage on the TE and outside WR with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, since the crossing action creates natural rub separation that man defenders struggle to fight through. Press coverage combined with a hard blitz negates this play quickly since the play-action fake takes time to develop, so if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge the quarterback needs to get the ball out fast or check down immediately.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake by holding the HB ball fake animation as long as possible before your first read, since defenders keying the backfield will bite on the run action and open passing lanes over the middle.
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when defenses are more likely to load the box expecting run, since the play-action freeze on linebackers creates natural separation for the crossing routes.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties in a Cover 2 shell, hot route the flat route to stay in as an extra blocker and hit the deep corner route from the TE over the top of the cornerback's zone drop.
Pair PA Scissors with HB Slam or HB Stretch earlier in a drive to establish the run threat, then call this play to punish linebackers who start creeping up on run reads.
Against man coverage, trust the natural rub created by the crossing routes since the scissors action forces defenders into each other's paths, so hold your throw a beat longer to let the traffic create the window on the corner or post route.
