HB Slam out of I Form H Pro is a straight downhill dive run with 21 personnel, sending the HB immediately through the A or B gap behind the FB lead blocker. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double team potential at the point of attack, and the fullback leads through the hole to clear out the first defender. This is a pure run play designed to win with power and timing rather than deception, so the primary read is the HB hitting the gap fast and reading the block of the fullback and playside guard to decide whether to bounce or stick inside.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap: if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow at 3-4 yards, they can fill the dive lane instantly and blow this up. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, since a bigger nose or extra DL clogs the interior gaps this play needs. Key the fullback's block target post-snap to see if the defense sends a blitzer through the same gap, which forces a quick bounce read. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and should make you consider an audible to a play-action or pass concept instead. If the defense shows an overload blitz or nano blitz look at the line, this play struggles because there is no built-in protection adjustment.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls from H Pro. Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, this play has a strong numbers advantage. Use it after showing Curls or PA Scissors from the same set so the defense respects the pass and slows their run fits. Avoid calling this into a stacked box with extra linebackers or a Sam edge crashing down, since the FB dive has no cutback design. Pair it with HB Stretch and HB Counter Wk in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on aiming point and force overpursuit.
