PA Post out of Full House Tight (32 personnel) opens with a play-action fake to sell the run before the route concept develops. The backside receiver runs a deep post that breaks across the middle of the field, the frontside receiver clears out on a deep out/flag route to the boundary, and the underneath receiver runs a wheel route to the flat and up the sideline as a check-down option against overaggressive linebackers. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish man coverage and single-high safety looks, with the post as the clear primary read that attacks the void left by the play fake, progressing from the post to the wheel route underneath if the post is not open.
Pre-snap, identify whether the free safety is aligned deep middle in a single-high shell, since this play is built to exploit exactly that look with the post route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard to defend the run fake, the wheel route out of the backfield will be wide open against man or zone. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4, key the deep post defender, if he sits flat-footed reading run action, the quarterback will hit the post in the seam before the safety can recover. User the deep middle defender manually to jump the post route timing, this is the single biggest way to shut this play down since the post is the primary progression. Beware of aggressive nano blitzes up front, since the play-action fake requires the offensive line to hold blocks slightly longer, making the quarterback vulnerable if the interior line gets beat before the fake sells.
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.
Check pre-snap for single-high safety alignment or man coverage indicators like tight press corners, since this play is designed to exploit exactly that shell.
Hot route the wheel route runner into a delayed drag or spot route if you diagnose zone coverage, since the wheel is more of a man beater against linebackers who bite on the flat.
Pair this play with Power O and HB Slam from the same Full House Tight set so the defense respects the run fake and bites harder on the play-action, opening up the post even more.
If the safety rotates to double the post, work the deep out breaking route on the frontside since it is running away from rotation-heavy coverages like Cover 3.
