PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action pass out of the Full House Tight formation with 32 personnel, built off a center run fake to hold linebackers and safeties before the QB waggles out. Off the fake, the deep route breaks vertically up the seam then kicks outside on a corner angle, while the underneath crosser drags flat across the field into the opposite flat, and a check-down runs a flat route to the play-action side. This is a play-action man beater that also stresses zone defenders who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the deep out-breaking route first, down to the underneath crosser working across the field, and finally to the flat route as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers crashing downhill on the run fake, that aggression is exactly what this play is designed to exploit with the crossing route. Check safety depth pre-snap: two deep safeties sitting back signals zone coverage and tells the QB to work the deep corner route into the open window. If you see man coverage indicators like corners aligned tight with no safety help over the top, expect the crosser to separate against trailing defenders. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the crossing route if the QB stares it down too long. Against blitz packages, the flat route becomes the answer route quickly, so key on edge rushers crashing the play-action fake to confirm the QB has room to waggle outside the pocket.
Usage Tips
Run this from run-heavy personnel and early down-and-distance situations like first and ten or second and short so the center run fake actually holds the defense.
Pair this with Power O and Counter Lead earlier in a drive so linebackers start keying run fits, then dial up PA Ctr Waggle to punish that aggression.
Read the flow of the linebackers at the snap: if they crash hard on the fake, the underneath crosser will come open quickly as they overrun the play.
Against zone shells, prioritize the deep corner breaking route since it settles behind underneath zone drops and in front of deep coverage.
If the defense shows man coverage pre-snap, hot route the flat route to a quick out or speed out to give the QB an instant answer against blitz pressure.
