X Spot out of Tight Slot Far is the classic Spot concept, built with a corner route from the outside receiver on the numbers, a short spot/hitch route sitting underneath around 5 yards, and a quick flat route from the slot to the boundary side. The single receiver away from the bunch runs a deep vertical to hold the backside safety and clear space underneath. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the corner route to attack the seam between the deep third defenders while the underneath spot and flat routes fill the flat and hook zones, and the primary read progression goes flat to spot to corner based on how the underneath defenders flow.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify a single high safety look since this formation and route combo is built to exploit Cover 3 and its natural flat to curl to deep third void. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the flat route the spot route behind him becomes the easy completion in the soft spot of the zone. Track the cornerback's depth at the snap, a corner playing off or bailing immediately signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 and tells you the corner route has room to sit down behind him. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone, since a smart user can jump the spot route and undercut it for a pick if you stare it down. Cover 2 with aggressive flat corners can jump both the flat and spot routes, so if you see two deep safeties and hard playing corners, look immediately to the backside vertical or work the corner route over the top.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety this Spot concept is designed to punish that Cover 3 shell immediately.
Key on the flat defender first since the flat route is your quick outlet against zone blitzes or Cover 3 sky rotations.
Use the corner route as your explosive shot play when the cornerback bails deep at the snap, since it settles into the void behind the underneath zone and in front of the deep third.
Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a comeback or dig if you are facing man coverage and need a quicker breaking route to beat off ball corners.
Pair this play with Curls or Curl Drag from the same set to keep the defense guessing between spot drops and curl sits, then mix in HB Dive or FB Dive to hold linebackers and open up the same route concepts later in the drive.
