Curl Drag out of Tight Slot Far is a full-flood passing concept built to attack the underneath and intermediate zones on both sides of the field. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback/curl breaking outside near the numbers, the slot receiver on the same side works a corner route toward the sideline, and the frontside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field underneath the linebackers while both backs release outside on flat routes to occupy the perimeter. This is a zone beater at its core, using horizontal stretch and route spacing to isolate soft zone landmarks, with the primary read progressing from the drag underneath to the curl on the backside as the quarterback works high to low.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the free safety depth and cornerback alignment to determine if the defense is playing a soft zone shell, since Curl Drag is designed to exploit the seams in Cover 2 and Cover 3. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the drag lane or "lurking" underneath, as this can bait the quarterback into an interception on the shallow crosser. Key the flat defenders after the snap, since if they widen with the running backs it opens the drag route behind them for an easy completion. Against man coverage, look for the drag route to draw a natural rub against the underneath defenders trailing the flat routes, which can spring the receiver open against man match schemes. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt this play's timing quickly, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and be ready to check into a hot route on the flat route as a quick outlet.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick alignment check to confirm if the defense is showing two high safeties, since Curl Drag thrives against zone shells like Cover 2 and Cover 3 where the drag can sit in the void behind the linebackers. If the drag route is your first read, throw with anticipation before the crosser reaches the opposite hash to beat closing linebackers and underneath defenders. Hot route the backside flat back into a flat or angle route if you diagnose man coverage, since the natural flat release combined with the curl can create a natural pick or rub against man defenders. Pair this play with Flats or Bench Switch from the same set to keep the defense guessing between horizontal stretches and vertical shots, since the pre-snap look is nearly identical. This play works best on second and medium to third and short, where the drag and flat routes give the quarterback a quick, high percentage throw underneath sticks.
