FB Dive out of Tight Slot Far is a straight downhill run play that hands the ball off to the fullback through the direct middle of the formation. The diagram shows the offensive line firing off the ball with the fullback taking a quick handoff and hitting the A gap immediately, while both receivers up top run vertical routes that are not part of the actual play design but hold the corners deep. This is a pure run play designed to punch through a gap before the defense can react, with the primary read being the fullback identifying which A gap or B gap opens based on the down block flow of the offensive line.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth before the snap since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can blow up FB Dive before it develops. This play struggles against a 4-3 or 46 front with linebackers sitting tight to the line, since there is no room for the fullback to find a crease. It thrives against light boxes, nickel or dime packages, and defenses that show soft shells expecting pass on early downs. Post-snap, key on defensive tackle penetration and whether the guards are able to seal the interior gaps, since any missed block collapses the play immediately. If the defense shows a Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell with only five or six in the box, this is an efficient way to stay ahead of the sticks without exposing the quarterback to a sack.
Usage Tips
Call this play on short yardage or goal line situations where you need one or two yards and want to catch a defense in a passing shell off guard. Use it after showing FB Dive a couple times to set up run fakes into play-action shots off the same look later in the drive. Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a play from this set like Curls or Flats to punish an overloaded run front. Snap the ball quickly after the play call to prevent the defense from diagnosing personnel and shifting into a heavier run-stopping front. Pair this with HB Dive in the same set to keep defenders guessing on which back is getting the carry, since both plays look identical pre-snap.
